The patient art of bobbin lace once again unfolds among the gilded walls of Écija. The next November 15th 2025, the city will host artisans and enthusiasts from all over Spain in the IX National Bobbin Lace Meeting "City of Écija", an already established event in the Andalusian textile calendar. The event will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 13:00 p.m. at the María del Carmen Ruiz Cano Sports Center, with the organization of the Écija Zulajía Association and the collaboration of Écija City Council.
Threads that bring together tradition and coexistence
Bobbin lace gatherings are much more than a technical demonstration: they are spaces for community. Here, the rhythmic sound of wooden sticks marks a pulse that unites generations. Tables are filled with frames, linen and cotton threads, tulle or torchon threads, and, above all, conversation.
In Écija, the atmosphere is filled with that Andalusian spirit that blends hospitality and craftsmanship. Participants in this ninth edition will find a spacious and bright space to work and share techniques: from the most classic lace to contemporary designs that incorporate color and volume. There will be no shortage of spontaneous demonstrations and pattern sharing among groups from different provinces, always with the smile of those who know that lacemaking is impossible without camaraderie.
How to enjoy the meeting
Hours and access: the appointment will be of 10 to 13 hours, ideal for enjoying the morning between pins and frames and leaving the afternoon free to explore the city. Admission is free (group registration is to be confirmed).
Material: It is recommended to bring your own skein, bobbins, fine threads, and a medium-weight thread. Some associations often offer spare threads and accessories, although it's a good idea to plan your own materials.
Location: The María del Carmen Ruiz Cano Sports Center offers a comfortable and accessible environment, with rest areas and good connections to the historic center.
Practical advice: If you're coming from outside the city, book accommodation in the historic center—many hostels and rural houses offer views of the towers and tile-lined courtyards—and enjoy a breakfast of molletes and olive oil before your day.
Écija, the city of towers and threads of light
Known as "the frying pan of Andalusia" for its summer climate, Écija in autumn is pure delight. The temperature softens, the air smells of freshly baked bread, and the blue sky highlights the golden stone of its Baroque churches. Strolling through its streets after the event is as sensorial an experience as looking at lace against the light.
Among the essentials, the following stand out: Plaza de España Known as The Lounge, the urban heart where morning chatter resonates. Nearby, the Peñaflor Palace It displays a facade that resembles lace carved in stone, with endless balconies and restored frescoes. Also worth visiting is the Municipal Historical Museum, in the Benamejí Palace, which houses Roman pieces and ancient textiles.
Those looking for textile inspiration can visit the Museum of Sacred Art of Santa María, where liturgical embroidery and gold filigree recall the region's artisanal talent. Every corner of Écija seems to pay homage to the details: in the tiles, the railings, the shawls hung during festivals.
Flavors to embroider the day
The tour wouldn't be complete without trying its cuisine. In autumn, the confectioneries fill their windows with Ecijan yolks y homemade mantecadosSweets that share the delicacy and precision of lace. For those who prefer savory dishes, stews with extra virgin olive oil and artisanal anise bring a finishing touch to a day of threadwork.
Where to eat:
El Buey Restaurant: traditional Andalusian cuisine with local products.
The Crystals Tavern: tapas with views of the Town Hall and a relaxed atmosphere.
San Pablo Confectionery: a must stop to take home a sweet souvenir.
