Emilia Pardo Bazán: The Ambassador of Camariñas Lace to the World

Emilia Pardo Bazán: The Ambassador of Camariñas Lace to the World

Hello all lovers of lace and history! Today we want to share with you a fascinating story that takes us back to the 19th century and shows us how an extraordinary woman, Emilia Pardo Bazán, became the first great international ambassador of Camariñas lace.

In 1893, at the request of Queen Victoria Eugenia, Emilia Pardo Bazán and other illustrious personalities of the time embarked on a very special mission: to prepare a dossier on the work of women in Spain. The objective was to show the world the skills and abilities of the Camarina lace makers at the Chicago Universal Exhibition. This exhibition was an event of great relevance and significance, and thanks to the proposal of Pardo Bazán and her team, the artisanal work of the town of Camariñas was present from October 1 to 3, 1893.

In his words, Pardo Bazán described with admiration and emotion the talent of the lace makers of Camariñas. He mentioned how the humble lace makers, toasted by the sea breeze, demonstrated their skill through the specimens collected and sent by Mr. Pardiñas. These women, with their agile chopsticks, created authentic works of art in the form of white lace that rivaled the best in the country.

Pardo Bazán emphasized that handmade lace is considered among works of art. His passion for this art form and his commitment to the lace makers of Camariñas were captured in his writings. At a time when lace makers barely made any profits for their work, Pardo Bazán was their voice and their defender.

In 1896, Pardo Bazán mentioned lace again in his writings, highlighting the beauty and authenticity of handmade lace in contrast to mechanical imitations. His love for lace and his efforts to spread the importance of it are undeniable.

In summary, Emilia Pardo Bazán was much more than an outstanding writer; She was a passionate ambassador of Camariñas lace, who, with her tireless work and commitment, allowed this art to cross borders and earn a special place in history. Her legacy lives on and inspires us to value and support the traditional arts and the skill of the talented hands that create them. Bravo, Emilia Pardo Bazán, for being a true ambassador of Camariñas lace to the world!
