Creative Barcelona 2026: bobbin lace returns to La Farga
Bobbin lace will have its own dedicated space at Creativa Barcelona from November 5th to 8th, 2026. The major arts and crafts fair at La Farga de L'Hospitalet will bring together shops, workshops, and demonstrations for four days, and amidst all the activity, the familiar sound of the bobbin lace will once again fill the air. It's a wonderful opportunity to watch expert lacemakers at work and for those who are curious to try this craft for the first time.
Four days to discover the lace
El official program of Creativa Barcelona The Catalan Lacemakers Association announces an event. Students from the association will work on their lace pieces under the guidance of Pilar Garcés and share the process with the public. On Thursday, visitors can closely observe the progress of a piece; on Friday and Saturday, there will be demonstrations and workshops open to adults and children.
The proposal has special value because it allows one to witness the lacemaking process as it unfolds. On the cushion, the threads still appear as separate paths. Hands cross and turn pairs of bobbins, place pins, and adjust the tension until an orderly network emerges. Seeing this transformation helps one understand a technique that, in a finished piece, can seem almost impossible.

The organization states on its website visitor information Tickets and workshops can also be purchased on-site. A table where there's always room for a question.
The meeting is designed for sharing. Those who already make bobbin lace can observe how to arrange the pairs, the types of cushions, or the choice of threads. It will also be a good time to ask how to finish a corner, why a background loses its evenness, or what kind of stitch might be helpful to start with.
For newcomers, the workshops offer the opportunity to try lace without turning the first experience into an exam. Basic movements are learned slowly: crossing, turning, pinning, and tightening. The initial result may be small, but it allows you to feel the rhythm that underpins any more complex lacework.
It's also worthwhile to look at the work at different stages. A newly started piece reveals the preparation; a half-finished piece shows how the design and the threads relate to each other; a completed lace allows you to appreciate the effect of light in the spaces. Together, they form a much clearer explanation than a silent display case.
Much more than bobbins
Creativa Barcelona brings together various craft disciplines, so a visit can be enriched with related materials, ideas, and techniques. Sewing, embroidery, papermaking, weaving, and other creative forms coexist in the same space. For a lacemaker, this intersection opens up possibilities: a thread discovered at another stall, an unexpected color combination, or a different way of presenting a piece can inspire her next project.
The fair also has a dedicated children's area. This openness fits well with the spirit of the event, which aims to introduce a traditional technique to new hands. You don't need to know the names of the stitches to be captivated by the lace; simply observing how a series of simple gestures ultimately creates something delicate and durable is enough.
An old factory turned into a meeting place
The venue adds another story to the day. The documentation of L'Hospitalet City Council Remember that La Farga began as a metallurgical plant at the beginning of the 20th century and became a prominent steel industry. After the factory closed, the space was repurposed for fairs and community events.
It's lovely to imagine bobbin lace now occupying a building that for decades was linked to metalwork. Where heavy industry once resonated, light woods, threads, and conversations will gather. Creativa Barcelona will thus allow visitors to dedicate a few hours to learning, buying materials, and, above all, seeing that lace continues to find new gathering places.
